Welcome to Stan's Hollywood Treasures! This blog is a collection of vintage photographs and movie star memorabilia. These items were collected by my uncle in the late 20's, 30's and 40's. He loved the arts and all things associated with it. Although he spent his youth growing up on a farm in Garland, Utah he spent hours reading Hollywood magazines and going to the movies every chance he could - hitching a ride with friends (after chores of course). While in high school he started writing to his favorite actor or actress and tell them what he loved about them and their movie. They would often write him back and send him a hand-signed photo of themselves. Stan and Jimmy Stewart even exchanged Christmas cards! I dedicate this blog to Stanley Johnson who as a young man fell in love with Hollywood. Stanley Johnson was the oldest of 7 children born to Ellwood Lewis Johnson and Ida Martha Hansen. He attended school in Garland, Utah and graduated from Bear River High School in 1938. While in high school, he began writing for the local paper, "The Garland Times," which evolved into a weekly column called, "Columeandering' and lasted for about 20 years. Stanley continued his education at Weber College and the University of Utah. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942, but was allowed to complete the year and graduated in May 1942. Stanley served 3 1/2 years in the army during World War II in the South pacific and with occupation forces in Japan, returning home the day before Christmas 1945. Continuing with graduate work at the University of Southern California, he completed his PhD in 1955. In January 1950 he accepted a position in the English department at Portland State University. He taught there for 35 years. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe. Stanley had a great interest in music, especially opera and wrote articles for the Portland Opera and the Musical Theatre Company programs. He also served on their board of directors. Stanley was a member of the Thomas Wolfe Society, Sherlock Holmes Society, Friends of Mystery, and the Senior Studies Institute. As a member of the Portland State retired faculty association, he received their award for community services in 2001. Stanley was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter Day Saints
